Foundational Studies of Education

History of Education

History of Education reviews the particular topic of researches on the History of Korean Education, discovers a new research topic, and studies it. By reading and reviewing the main research on the History of Asian Education and Western Education, it helps a basic understanding of the two different history of education, enhances the comparative perspectives, and raises a critical question.

 

Philosophy of Education

Philosophy of Education program aims at training students to develop their ability to do a philosophical inquiry on the meanings, purposes and values of educational policy and practice to understand the nature of educational practice and contribute to its improvement. It takes on especially a post-modern perspective in its inquiry, focusing on values education, such as aesthetic, moral and civic educations, as well as teacher education.

 

Curriculum

Curriculum studies explores theories and practices related to primary issues in curriculum and offers master’s and doctoral programs. Main areas of research in curriculum studies are curriculum theory, curriculum development, international comparison of curriculum, curriculum implementation and teacher education. In this major, qualitative research methods such as document analysis, case study and comparative analysis are frequently used.

 

Educational Psychology

Educational Psychology deals with the application of psychological principles and theories to a broad spectrum of teaching, training, and learning issues in educational settings. SNU's educational psychology program focuses on the various issues such as cognitive learning theory, purpose development, creative problem solving, creativity, gifted education, and talent development. Examples of research topics include the validation of a teacher goal measure, creativity in architecture, creativity and artistic experiences, development of a creativity measure, learners' experiences in convergence education, identification of mathematically and scientifically gifted students, volunteering and social purpose, and leadership development for academically gifted students.

 

Sociology

Sociology of Education is the study of how social institutions and individuals' experiences within these institutions affect educational processes and social
development. This field examines education issues that arise from the social context of schools, ranging from the individual to the structure of relations among social and educational institutions. By focusing on research topics, such as education and social change, education inequality, multicultural education, educational reform, globalization and education, educational politics, etc., it aims at empowering the student’s academic abilities to understand and research various educational phenomenons from a sociological perspective.

 

Educational Anthropology

Educational anthropology is a study to inquire on the systemic web of life, culture and education. Educational anthropology and qualitative research have a strong interrelationship not only from the epistemological perspective but also from the ontological perspective. Especially we focus on phenomenological philosophy of ‘文質彬彬’ as it appeared in the Analects of Confucius. Educational anthropology can understand the education that happens in everyday life, and take on new perspectives of the world and new ways of life.

 

Educational Measurement and Evaluation

Educational Measurement and Evaluation(EME) is a research area of education where assessment and analysis of educational data is performed and further evaluation is conducted. Under the directorship of two faculty members of the education department, master's and doctoral students study on various subjects including multivariate analysis, item response theory, causal inference, big data and program evaluation.

 

 

Educational technology

Educational technology major is associated with research integrated with theories and practices from a variety of contexts. By focusing on principles, strategies, and models of instructional design, such as how to effectively design and develop educational programs, it pursues systematic and prescriptive knowledge. This major provides practical learning experiences, such as engaging in various development research, projects, and higher order problem solving process.

 

Educational Counseling

The mission of SNU's Educational Counseling Program is to educate highly skilled professionals who adhere to the scientist-practitioner model and can conduct socially and globally relevant research, as well as teach and practice effectively in diverse domestic and international educational, public, and private settings with individuals of all ages and circumstances. Our Program and faculty have achieved national and international distinction in the field of Counseling

Lifelong Education

The Lifelong Education program focuses on expanding the domain of education by covering education and learning of all age occurring in various scopes. Focused areas of research and practices are adult education and learning, learning society, policy and system of lifelong education, and informal·nonformal education. The main study in HRD is the process of improving learning and performance in individual, group, and organization contexts through domains of expertise such as lifelong learning, career development, training and development, leadership development, and organization development.
